The exhibition focuses on the first Parisian period of the highly productive artist between 1913 and 1931.
It presents more than a hundred major works from public and private collections retracing the exceptional character of the crazy years of Foujita in Montparnasse, surrounded by his friends Modigliani, Zadkine, Soutine, Indenbaum, Kisling or Pascin.
A unique and atypical destiny, this artist has evolved between two cultures to create singular and recurrent characters in his works where abound women, cats, children, self-portraits and still lifes.
Crazy about drawing, Foujita handled the brush with brio in the line of his illustrious predecessor Hokusai. His works bear witness to his calligraphic finesse, the delicacy of his gouaches and his watercolors.
Subtlety and refinement characterize the luminous, mystical work inspired by the most oriental painters of Montparnasse. Dandy, painter, photographer, illustrator respectful of writings, Foujita reveals his magic in everyday life and hijacks codes with humor and sensitivity.
