The Orsay and Orangery museums are organizing the first comprehensive exhibition of the chapter of Magritte’s work in his «Renoir Period» from 1943 to 1947.
This largely unrecognized period of his work allows us to show the paintings of René Magritte against those of Auguste Renoir who inspired him.
In this atmosphere at the end of the world war with the defini- tive defeat of Nazi Germany, Magritte saw himself as a prophet of peace and rediscovered happiness. He then chose to replace the disturbing poetry of his paintings by the charm of women, flowers, birds and trees, «the beautiful side of life», as he wrote to Paul Eluard in 1941.
