From April 16 to December 31, 2022, a double exhibition dedicated to Maya Ruiz-Picasso, articulated in two parts:
“New masterpieces. The Maya Ruiz-Picasso Donation” and «Maya Ruiz-Pi- casso, daughter of Pablo», is an opportunity to present to the public all nine exceptional works from the Maya Ruiz-Picasso collection which have joined the national collections by donation, while exploring the precious testimonies of a relationship between a father and his daughter.
When María de la Concepción was born in September 1935,Picasso is alrea- dy the father of a fourteen-year-old son, Paul (nicknamed Paulo), born of his union with his first wife, the Russian ballet dancer Olga Khokhlova, married in 1918. Maya Ruiz-Picasso is the first daughter of Pablo Picasso and the fruit of his passionate love for Marie-Thérèse Walter, a young woman he met in 1927.
Fatherhood stirs Picasso; his children are for him a real engine of his creativity. He will devote his fabulous energy to them and will represent them on many occasions in his works with tenderness and great gentleness.
Maya grew up in a period marked by conflict and restrictions. To distract her from this difficult environment, Picasso created makeshift toys in keeping with his art and his plastic preoccupations of the moment.
