Trained in the school of Titian and the Venetian painters of the 15th and 16th centuries, where drawing may seem to have minor importance compared to the use of the force of colors,
Hayez manages on the other hand to balance the two and to create powerful works.
After becoming interested in mythology and ancient history, he abandoned it to promote romantic painting.
He made numerous paintings of his mistress Carolina Zucchi in the privacy of his bedroom or in several sensual versions of Mad- dalena as well as other erotic drawings.
The following sections are first devoted to the war with its atroci- ties and then to romantic heroines.
The myth of Romeo and Juliet is very dear to him and his famous painting «The Kiss» is filled with this passionate love between two young people but also symbolizes the unification of Italy.
The exhibition continues with his portraits, examples of his great finesse, the history of Venice and representations of the nude with biblical characters, odalisques and nymphs.
