In 1865, Lord Hertford, founder of the Wallace Collection in London, bought “The Laughing Horseman” at a sale in Paris for the sum of 51,000 francs, six times its value at the time.
This acquisition caused a great stir and this publicity encouraged renewed inte- rest in the artist.
For the first time, this famous painting leaves its home in the Wallace Collection, Manchester Square, to be exhibited in Trafalgar Square, home of the National Gallery.
From the height of their 400 years, these portraits contemplate us with the same verve, the same passion, the same innocence or the same cunning in a universal and eternal ode to the glory of our humanity.
