Caravaggio is one of the most important representatives of natur-
lism; the Lombard master devoted his life to studying the representation of
reality and depicting authentic scenes derived from his exposure to every-
day life.
The protagonists of his works are almost always humble people, prostitutes,
beggars, and the poor picked up in the streets and taverns, and very rarely
professional models.
His mastery of nuance in his choice of lighting imbues his paintings with a
theatrical atmosphere, placing his subjects at the center of attention.
The plasticity of the faces depicted is underscored by the perfection of his
chiaroscuro and highlights the sculptural character of his figures.
This superb exhibition allows us to contemplate Caravaggio’s dazzling
genius, his tormented vision of the world, and his creative force
imbued with a fragile humanity in all its intensity.
