Opening in May, the 19th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale is one
of the most ambitious and conceptually rich in recent years. Entitled «Intelligens.
Natural. Artificial. Collective,» this edition is directed by Carlo Ratti, architect and
engineer.
Through this theme, the Biennale offers a profound reflection on the various forms of
intelligence that today influence the way we design, inhabit, and transform the built
world. The environmental dimension is central to this edition.
Natural intelligence, found in ecosystems, biological cycles, and the behavior of spe-
cies, becomes a major source of inspiration for the exhibiting architects.
Projects are showcased that engage with nature, integrate the dynamics of soil, wa-
ter, and vegetation, and use biodegradable or living materials. Several installations
highlight architectural solutions that adapt to climate change rather than attempting
to control it, promoting regenerative architecture.
Another part of the exhibition is devoted to artificial intelligence, which is no longer
simply an optimization tool, but a design partner. Many projects experiment with AI
in shape modeling, building energy management, or predicting uses. Some pavilions
feature interactive devices that demonstrate how algorithms can learn from human or
natural behaviors to create dynamic, adaptive, and almost living environments.
This 2025 Biennale also emphasizes collective intelligence, that of communities,
cultures, and shared traditions. Several national pavilions feature independent projects
that address participatory processes where residents become co-authors of the space.
