Conceived as a dialogue between medieval and contemporary works, this ex-
hibition is part of the Berserk & Pyrrhia program presented by the Fonds régional
d’art contemporain (Frac) Île-de-France.
Some fifteen works by contemporary artists showcase their fantastical worlds in
hybrid and marvelous figures emerging from their imaginations tinged with heroic
fantasy.
This dreamlike fiction, fueled by magic and supernatural legends, has left its mark
on video games and manga culture, allowing young heroes to fantasize about their
battles by pitting themselves against the collective myths of esotericism, love, and
death in unknown lands. The encounter with the works of medieval artisans has
inspired a form of anthropology of the often idealized Middle Ages. These new
chimeras emerge from among the museum’s works to offer their interpretation of
medieval art.
