T he swimming pool, Hockney’s signature theme, is presented at the opening
with his famous series of double portraits. From the 1980s to the 1990s, nature
took an increasingly important place in the artist’s work. David Hockney returned
to Europe and spent the last 25 years rediscovering the landscapes of his childhood
in Yorkshire, London, and Normandy.
He mastered the art of observing the light of the seasons from Spring to Winter,
while continuing to immortalize his loved ones and himself in acrylics or on an
iPad. Finally, the top floor demonstrates how Hockney’s painting draws on the
universal history of art since Antiquity. Focusing on European painting from the
early Renaissance and Flemish painters to modern art, it bears witness to this dia-
logue with Fra Angelico, Claude Lorrain, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Picasso.
The exhibition takes place in his gallery-studio, transformed into a dance and mu-
sic hall.
